Prince of Wales Visit to Ceylon 1922

වේල්සයේ කුමාරයා ලංකාවට කීප විඩක්ම ඇවිදින් තියෙනවා. මේ කියන්න යන්නේ 1922 අවුරුද්දේ, ඒ කියන්නේ මීට අවුරුදු 100කට කලින් හිටපු වේල්සයේ කුමාරයා කරපු සංචාරයක් ගැන.

නැවක මුහුදෙන් යද්දි දවසින් දෙකෙන් රටකට ගිහින් එන්න බැහැනෙ නෙව. ඉතින් එයාලගේ වැයික්කියම බලාකියාගෙන එන්න තමයි සවාරියක් සැලසුම් කරන්නේ. ඉතින් ආසියානු ගමනක් නම් ලංකාවත් අනිවාර්යයෙන්ම ඔය ට්‍රිප් එකේ එක තිප්පොළක් වෙනවා.

1921 නොවැම්බර් මාසේ රාජකීය "රිනොවුන්" (Renown) නෞකාවෙන් මුහුදට බහින වේල්සයේ කුමාරයා හෙවත් එඩ්වඩ් කුමාරයා (පස්සේ කාලෙක නෝනා හන්දා රජකම අතඇරිය කෙනා) ඉන්දියාවේ අරහෙ මෙහෙ කරක් ගහලා කරච්චියේ ඉඳන් ලංකාවට, කොළඹට, සේන්දු වෙන්නේ මාර්තු මාසේ. හරියටම කිව්වොත් මාර්තු 21 අඟහරුවාදා. ඒකාලේ ලංකාවේ ආණ්ඩුකාරයා ශ්‍රීමත් විලියම් මැනිං, කුමාරයා ඇතුළු පිරිවර බොහොම ගෞරවයෙන් කොළඹදී පිළිගත්තා.

- His Enthusiastic Welcome in Ceylon -

The Prince of Wales, on the conclusion of his memorable tour in India, sailed from Karachi in the Renown to Ceylon for a five day visit before setting out on his further journey to the land of the Rising Sun. At Colombo where he was received by Sir William Manning, the Governor, he had a remarkably hearty welcome, the streets, through which he drove in an open car, being lined by dense crowds; and no less enthusiastic was his reception at Kandy, where he met the Kandyan chiefs, received addresses from the planters, and witnessed a picturesque torchlight procession which was arranged in his honour."

ඊළඟ උදෑසන කොළඹ කොටුවේ එෂලාන් බැරැක්ක ඉදිරිපිට ලංකා පාබල හමුදා රෙජිමේන්තු වර්ණ ප්‍රදානෝත්වය 1000ක විතර සෙනඟකගේ සහභාගීත්වයෙන් උත්සවාකාරයෙන් පැවැත්වුණා. එක එක ජාතියේ නිලඇඳුම් ලා ගත් මිනිසුන්; පොලිස් ඇඳුමෙන්, සුදු පැහැ ඩ්‍රිල් ඇඳුමින්, කාකි ඇඳුමෙන් සැරසුණු ඈයෝ මධ්‍යාහේන අව් රශ්මිය කාගෙන මේකට ඇවිත් හිටගෙන හිටියා. බැරැක්ක පිට්ටනියේ හෙවණක්වත් තිබුණේ නැහැනේ. කුමාරයාත් අව්ව නොතකා හැම සෙබළෙකුටම, නිලධාරියෙකුටම අතට අත දීලා, සිනාවකින් සංග්‍රහ කරලා හැමෝගේම සිත් සතුටු කළා.

Kandyan Notabilities and their Wives at the Royal Garden Party.

The Prince's visit to Kandy was the occasion for a demonstration of loyalty on the part of the Kandyan chiefs. After dinner on the evening of the Prince's arrival a big durbar was held, at which all the notabilities and their wives attended, and were presented to the royal visitor.

The Chief Priest of the Temple

Whose principal duty is the care of the sacred tooth. On festival days it is taken in a gold and jewelled casket on the back of a huge elephant in a torchlight procession.

The Temple of the Tooth is one of the sights of Ceylon. It contains Buddha's tooth, a relic of great veneration throughout the island, as Buddhism is the chief religion there.

- His visit to Kandy, the former capital of the island -

The Prince of Wales had a very pleasant time in Ceylon before setting out on his voyage to the far east. Of special interest was his journey into the heart of the island to Kandy, the former capital. On the way, he had an opportunity of seeing the planting country and the forest regions, and at Kandy itself, where he had a splendid reception, everything possible was done to ensure his enjoyment. Among the events organized in his honour were a remarkable torchlight procession and an exhibition of native dancing. It is not improbable that the Prince may again visit the island when returning from Japan."

මෙසේ මහනුවර දවස ගත කළ කුමරු ඇතුළු සපිරිවර සිකුරාදා නැවත කොළඹ බලා පැමිණියේ හවස් යාමයේ වූ තුරඟ තරඟයක් දැක බලාගන්න. මේ විදිහට දවස් පහක්ම ලංකාවේ ගත කරපු එඩ්වඩ් කුමාරයා, පසුදා, සෙනසුරාදා, උදාසන 11ට සිලෝනයට ආයුබෝවන් කියා 'රිනොවුන්' නැවේ නැගී නොට් 21 වේගයෙන් මැලේසියානු අර්ධද්වීපය බලා පිටත් වුණා.

The Prince has already left India in the "Renown," arriving at Colombo on March 25 last, and at Port Swettenham, in Malaysia, on March 28. The course of the "Renown" to the Far East is here indicated by a broken black line, with dates of arrival at the various points en route.

KANDY (old capital of Ceylon)
Thursday -The Prince of Wales had a wonderful journey to Kandy from Colombo this morning. The entire population of the district for 15 miles on each side of the railway gathered at the wayside stations to see his special pass. It was like the popular demonstrations which greeted him in Australia and Canada. There were solid masses of Cingalese in deep rows on every station platform and on the banks, rocks and trees between them. The people had gone to extraordinary pains to decorate his 70-mile route from Colombo. Even single mud huts displayed the Union Jack., and every tiny village under the palms showed its loyalty with bamboo or garlands strung between the trees.

Crowds all the Way:
For three and a half hours the Prince passed, what appeared to be an almost continuous crowd beginning at Colombo, continuing along the rice-field of the plain, then clinging in thin lines to the steep sides of the hills, where the special began the climb into the cooler air, and swelling again in numbers as the train approached this pleasant little city of Kandy.

The absolute spontaneity of the reception was unmistakable. The people cheered like Europeans, or saluted the Prince with precise volleys of hand clapping. Some stations contributed drummers banging their tom toms.

The Prince was received at the station here by Kandy chiefs in picturesque full dress, with Balloon-like skirts of heavy silk, and jewelled hats. A brief address was followed by as brief a response, after which the Prince motored to the Planters' Hall, where he was greeted by the majority of the 1300 planters of the island, and an infantry battalion.

The town itself was filled to its utmost by visitors from all parts of the island. The Prince shook hands with many of them at the garden party this afternoon.

A Special Honor:
To-night he will attend at the Durbar Hall a reception by the chiefs. Afterwards he will walk to the famous Temple of Buddha's Tooth, adjoining the Durbar Hall, where will be displayed, as a special honor for him, this sacred relic, reported to be a tooth of Buddha.

The Prince of Wales arrived in Ceylon on March 21, and later went by rail from Colombo to Kandy. "All the way," writes Mr Perceval Landon, "the same multitudinous welcome awaited the royal train. Here in Ceylon was no need of watchmen along the line, or of emptied platforms, or of a 'No Mans's Land' beside the track. The masses pressed closesly in beside the moving wheels... It was a triumphal progress all the way."
