Nuwara Ellia

එක් දිනක ඇජැක්සුත් මමත් නුවරඑළිය බලා පිටත් වුණා. ගිය දුම්රිය මැදිරිය සම්පූර්ණයෙන්ම වගේ පිරිලා හිටියේ තේ වැවිලිකරුවන්ගෙන්. (මේ අතර බිරින්දෑවරුන් හා සහෝදරියන් එක්කෙනෙක් දෙන්නෙක් දකින්න හිටියා.) ඒ වගේම අපි හිටපු හෝටලයෙත් තේ වැවිලිකරුවන් කිහිප දෙනෙක් හිටියා. මේ වගේ දුරස්තර සාවියක සම්පූර්ණ සම්මත ඉංග්‍රීසි ඇඳුමම ඇඳගත්ත, ඒත් සාමාන්‍ය මැද පෙළ ව්‍යාපාරික පංතියේ වුණු, ඉංග්‍රීසි මුහුණු කීපයක්ම දකින්න ලැබීම කුතුහලය දනවන කාරණාවක්.

නුවරඑළිය

සමහර අයෙක් දුක් සහගත උදාසීන කමක් පෙන්නුවා. තමන්ගේ තත්වයත් නම්බුවත් තියාගන්න ඕනා හන්දා ඔවුන් කටයුතු කළේ මෙහි කාලවර්ණ මිනිස්සුත් ජීවත් වෙනවා කියලා හිතන්නේ බලන්නේවත් නැතුව. ඔවුන් එයාලට කෑගහන විදිහට හිතෙන්නේ එයාලා බිහිරි වෙලා ඉන්නවා ඇතියි කියලා.

කොහොම වුණත් හවස් යාමයේදී (හෝටලයෙදී) මමයි ඇජැක්සුයි පියානෝවේ හොඳින් දන්නා තනු කීපයක් වාදනය කරනකොට බ්‍රිතාන්‍යයන් උද්යෝගීමත් වෙච්ච ආකාරය නම් අපේ සිත තදින් ස්පර්ශ කළා. ඔවුන් අප අසලට ඇවිත් පැවසුවේ මේ වාදනයෙන් ඔවුන්ට මව් රටේ සිය ගෙදර මතක් වුණු බවක්. එනිසාම අපෙන් බැගෑපත් ලෙස ඉල්ලුවා තව දුරටත් වාදනය කරන්නයි කියලා. ඉතින් ඇජැක්ස් කිසිම සූදානමක් නැතිව වුණත් පුරුදු පරිදි හිටිවනම ඔහුගේ මනෝහර වාදනයෙන් මාත් සමඟ පැය දෙකක් තිස්සේ ඔවුන්ව කුල්මත් කළා.

නුවර එළිය මුහුදු මට්ටමින් අඩි 6,000ක් විතර උස, හෝටලයක් දෙකක් සහිත කුඩා ගම්මානයක්. එහෙම නැතිනම් කියන්න පුළුවන් කොළඹ ඇතුළු පහත්බිම් වලින් ග්‍රීෂ්මාධික තරමක් තෙත් වූ වාතය ගලාගෙන එන ජනප්‍රිය නවාතැන් පොළක් කියලා. මෙහිදී බ්‍රිතාන්‍යයන්ට පේන්න තියන දෙයක් තමයි විසිත්ත කාමර වල තනා තියන ගිනි උඳුන් සහ  පිටත ඇති ඝන මීදුම. ඒ වගේම දකින්න පුළුවන් තව දෙයක් තමයි ලොකු කබායක් ඇඳගෙන ගෙදර හිටපු හැටියටම වගේ ඉන්න ලොකු ලොක්කෝ. ඒත් අපි තාම මීදුමෙන් වැසෙන භූමියක (එංගලන්තය) ඉඳන් ඇවිත් වැඩි කලක් නැති හන්දා මේ ප්‍රීති ප්‍රමෝදය අපට නම් එතරම් අගයක් වුණේ නැහැ. අපිට හිතුණේ මේ ස්ථානය ටිකක් නීරස හිස් තැනක් කියලා.

CHAPTER II: KANDY AND PEASANT LIFE

One day Ajax and I went up to Nuwara Ellia. The railway carriage was full of tea-planters (including one or two wives and sisters), and there were a few at the hotel. It was curious to see some English faces of the cold- mutton-commercial type, and in quite orthodox English attire, in this out-ofthe- way region. The good people looked sadly bored, and it seemed a point of honor with them to act throughout as if the colored folk didn't exist or were invisible—also as if they were deaf, to judge by the shouting. In the evening however (at the hotel) we felt touched at the way in which they cheered up when Ajax and I played a few familiar tunes on the piano. They came round, saying it reminded them of home, and entreated us to go on ; so we played for about two hours, Ajax improvising as usual in the most charming way.

Nuwara Ellia is 6,000 feet above the sea—a little village with an hotel or two—a favorite resort from the sultry airs of Colombo and the lowlands. Here the Britisher finds fires in the sitting- rooms and thick mists outside, and dons his great-coat and feels quite at home. But we, having only just come from the land of fogs, did not appreciate these joys, and thought the place a little bleak and bare.
