The Talipot Palm

පේරාදෙණිය උද්භිත උද්‍යානය තියෙන්නේ මහනුවර නගරයෙන් සැතපුම් තුන හතරක් පිටතින්. පුස්කොළ පොත් හදන්න ගන්න තල ගහක හොඳටම පීදිච්ච තල මලක් අපි එහිදී දැක්කා. හැබැයි මේ ලස්සන ශාකය පොල් ගස වගේ නම් නෙවෙයි. හොඳට කෙළින් සෘජුව වැඩෙන ශාකයක්.

තල ගස

එහි මල් පූදින්නේ එක වරයි. ඉන්පසුව ගස මිය යනවා. හෙකල් කියන විදිහට තල ගසක් අවුරුදු 50ක් 80ක් අතර කාලයක් ජීවත් වෙනවා. ඒ වගේම මේ පූදින තල මල සමහර විටක අඩි 30ක් 40ක් විතර දික් වෙනවා. අපි දුටුව තලමල පීදුණු ගසේ කඳ නම් අඩි 45ක් වගේ උසට තිබ්බා. මේ ගසේ ඔටුන්නක් වගේ රූප සම්පන්නව විහිදී ගිය පත්‍ර අතරින් මලක් හට ගන්නවා. මේ මල ගත්තොත් එහි අතු බෙදී විහිදි ගිහින් තියනවා දකින්න පුළුවන්. මේ අතු වල අනේක සංඛ්‍යාවක් කූරු කූරු වගේ කුඩා සුදු මල් තියනවා.

මගේ නිමානයට අනුව මේ තල මල අඩි 15ක්. (ඒත් පස්සෙ මම පුවත් පතක දැක්කා එය විස්තර කරලා අඩි 20ක් උසයි කියලා)

බේකර් කියන්නේ තල මලේ ගොබය බොහෝ විට අඩි 4ක් විතර දිගයි කියලා. ඔහු කියන විදිහට මේ ලස්සන සුදු පැහැ පෙඳි දිග ඇරිලා හිරු දෙසට එසවෙන විට ගොබය දැකුම්කළු ලෙස විවෘත වෙනවලු.

ස්වදේශිකයන් මේ තල් ගසේ, වටකුරු, සමහර විටෙක විෂ්කම්භය අඩි 8ක් 9ක් තරම් පවා විශාල වෙන පත්‍ර, කුඩයක් ලෙස ප්‍රයෝජනයට ගන්නවා. එහි ස්වභාවික රැළි ඔස්සේ අකුලා තබන්න පුළුවන්. ඒ වගේම අව්වට වැස්සට ආවරණය වෙන්න ඉහළගන්නත් පුළුවන්.

CHAPTER II: KANDY AND PEASANT LIFE

At the botanical gardens at Peradeniya—three or four miles out of Kandy—we saw a specimen of the talipot palm in full flower. This beautiful palm —unlike the coco palm—grows perfectly erect and straight ; it flowers only once, and then dies. Haeckel says that it lives from fifty to eighty years, and that the blossom is sometimes thirty or forty feet long. The specimen that we saw in blossom was about forty- five feet high in the stem ; and then from its handsome crown of huge leaves sprang a flower, or rather a branched spike of numerous white flowers, which I estimated at fifteen feet high (but which I afterwards saw described in the newspapers as twenty feet high). Baker says that the flower bud is often as much as four feet long, and that it opens with a smart report, when this beautiful white plume unfolds and lifts itself in the sun. The natives use the great leaf of the talipot—which is circular and sometimes eight or nine feet in diameter— as an umbrella. They fold it together along its natural corrugations, and then open it to ward off sun or rain.
